School Social Services

Who is the School Social Service for?

The School Social Service works to protect children. Social workers from the School Social Service work in all public nursery and elementary schools to help pupils, on an individual or collective basis, at the request of the educational team, parents or pupils themselves (see circular 91248 of 11/09/1991 from the French Ministry of Education).

What are its missions?

  • Help prevent school maladjustment and failure by offering guidance and support to students in difficulty and their families.
  • Promoting school integration for children with health problems or disabilities.
  • Participate in the prevention and protection of minors at risk or likely to be at risk, and advise the school in this area.
  • Implement collective health and citizenship education initiatives in conjunction with teachers.

How does a school social worker's job work?

The social worker acts as an interface between the institution, the family environment and external partners. His or her position within the school enables him or her to forge day-to-day links with members of the school and extracurricular community.
Discussions take place at meetings (summaries, educational teams, preparation of personalized schooling plans, etc.) or during breaks, lunch breaks, school entrances and exits.
Based on what is observed and reported, the social worker intervenes in the social, family, educational and material dimensions of the child's difficulties.
It welcomes parents who need a listening ear, advice or support, and provides information, guidance and support on :
  • access to rights and care,
  • school catering,
  • extracurricular activities,
  • leisure activities,
  • the vacations,
  • homework help.
The social worker is bound by professional secrecy, which guarantees the confidentiality of exchanges (Article L411-3 of the French Social Action and Family Code and 226-13 of the French Penal Code).
