Enrollment in a Paris public school

Nursery school enrolment

Education is compulsory from the age of 3.

Registration for elementary school

Children enrolled in kindergarten are automatically enrolled in elementary school for the start of the school year in which they turn 6.
There is a possibility of admission for younger children who are ready for elementary school. For more information, contact the school or the Inspection Académique. No child can be kept in kindergarten beyond the age of 6, unless special education committees advise otherwise.
If your child was enrolled in nursery school, he or she is automatically enrolled at the end of kindergarten in your local elementary school. You will automatically be informed by mail of the elementary school in your area for the following year.

How to register your child

School registration for the start of the school year in September 2024 can be done online or directly at the town hall.
Whether you apply online or at your local mairie, here are the steps to follow:

First step: contact your local mairie (town hall)

If you apply online, your application will be processed by your local mairie. Alternatively, you can visit your local mairie.
We remind you that school registration can only be made by a person exercising parental authority (parent or legal guardian).
Documents required for school registration
In the event of a change of kindergarten or elementary school as part of a move or other situation:
  • Proof of identity of the legal guardian (national identity card, passport, residence permit, etc.).
If you are applying online and your MonParis account is linked to France Connect, this proof of identity is not required.
  • Family record book or full copy of the child's birth certificate (less than 3 months old)
  • One of the following proofs of address: electricity or gas bill less than three months old or current payment schedule OR income tax notice
  • Depending on your situation, the conditions for exercising parental authority
  • The child's health record showing compulsory vaccinations (consult the vaccination calendar on the service-public.fr website), or vaccination certificates, or a certificate of contraindication.
  • Where applicable, if the child was already enrolled (change of school or move), the certificate of expulsion from the previous school.
Specific situations are examined on a case-by-case basis.
Once these formalities have been completed, the Mairie d'arrondissement will issue a registration certificate indicating which school your child is to attend.
If you've recently moved, and are unable to produce proof of address at your new address, please contact your local mairie.
In certain situations, other documents may be required. It's always best to contact your local town hall.
If a school is overcrowded, the Mairie d'arrondissement can transfer the child's enrollment to another nearby school. If the child does not change schools, enrollment does not have to be renewed every year.

A copy of the most recent court decision establishing the conditions under which your child's parental authority is exercised and specifying your child's place of residence (or the principle of alternating custody).

Second step: with the school principal

Armed with the registration certificate, you are invited to go to the child's local school or one of the schools (your choice in the case of a shared sector) and present yourself to the principal so that he or she can proceed with admission.
If a school is overcrowded, the mayor's office can transfer the child to another nearby school. If the child does not change schools, registration does not have to be renewed every year.
Reminder of sanitary conditions
They are common to both nursery and elementary schools.
The health record or a document certifying that the child's compulsory vaccinations are up to date must be presented when registering at the Mairie.

Compulsory vaccinations include diphtheria, tetanus and polio. A medical certificate is required in the event of contraindication to vaccination.

Exemption requests for nursery and elementary schools

This applies to both nursery and elementary schools. As the dates for exemption requests vary from one arrondissement to another, it is advisable to obtain information and contact the Mairie of the arrondissement where the desired school is located.
She'll tell you what you need to do. It is a prerequisite that the child is already enrolled in a public school, or that you have already registered the child at the local Mairie.

Other possibilities

You can enroll your child in a public or private school. Enrollment in a private school is carried out by each school, whether under contract or not. Registration may take place on different dates. You should therefore check with each school principal.
If your child attends a private school under contract, he or she can be admitted to a public school simply by presenting his or her school file, which includes the decision to transfer to a higher class or to repeat a year, as long as you have registered the child with the Mairie of your arrondissement.
You can also decide to educate your child at home. In this case, you must first make a declaration to the local mayor and the local education inspector. This declaration must be renewed every year. Checks will be carried out to verify the child's level of education, as well as a social investigation to establish the compatibility of home schooling with the child's state of health and living conditions.

Middle and high school registration

College registration

The academic director of national education services responsible for secondary education decides on the student's assignment to the middle school in his or her area of residence (address of the principal residence of the child's legal representative). The sixth grade assignment is digital. There is no paper file to fill in for pupils in Paris public elementary schools, except in the case of a request for an exemption.
Admission to collège is subject to the decision of the Conseil des Maîtres to move on to 6e.

Registering for high school

Troisième is the year in which students make their first major career choice: continuing their studies in a general or technological stream, in a vocational stream or entering an apprenticeship.

Sectorization at school

Each year, the borough councils formulate proposals for changes to the school perimeter, based on criteria of proximity and social mix, which are deliberated by the Paris City Council.

Personal derogations are granted in a few exceptional cases based on a particular situation, justified on serious grounds.

Secondary school sectorization (carte scolaire)

Students are automatically assigned to their local collège. Since the decentralization law of August 13, 2004, the Paris Council (Conseil général) has been responsible for sectoring middle schools. It remains in force. However, assignments and exemptions are the responsibility of the Académie.
Please note: any waivers granted for primary school are not systematically renewed for secondary school.

Which school does your child attend?

The college of assignment is determined by the principal residence of the child's legal representative.

Derogation requests for middle school

Parents can request an exemption, i.e. an assignment to a school other than the collège de secteur, by contacting the school principal.
Exceptions may be granted subject to the availability of places after the allocation of sector students, and on the basis of reasons ranked in order of priority.

Special case of a request for an assignment to a specially-recruited school

These special cases concern :

School and vocational boarding schools

The "Internats Scolaires et Professionnels" (ISP) service is an optional service provided by the City of Paris with several objectives:
  • help families in difficulty to provide for their children's education
  • promoting academic success and vocational training
  • provide socio-educational and academic support for each young person, in liaison with schools, families and the various partners involved.
This service offers well-supervised schooling, a financial contribution from the City of Paris (boarding school grant) and follow-up for children and families by three socio-educational assistants from the School and Professional Boarding School Unit attached to the School Social Service Office.
Children attend schools under contract with the French Ministry of Education, approved by the City of Paris, which ensures the quality of teaching, supervision, accommodation and activities.
The fourteen "weekday" partner boarding schools are located mainly in the Paris suburbs, and offer general education (from collège to lycée) as well as vocational training (third year of vocational prep, CAP, vocational baccalaureate).
Children remain the sole responsibility of their parents. The family undertakes to cooperate closely with the support provided by the Pôle ISP socio-educational unit.
A financial contribution from the family is defined according to its resources (family quotient) and the scale set by the City of Paris. It varies from €40 to €400 per month.

School and vocational boarding school performance criteria

The service is aimed at families living in Paris, of French nationality or that are legal residents. Families where one of the parents is an employee of a Parisian administration (Ville de Paris, CASVP, AP-HP) can also benefit, regardless of their place of residence.
Children eligible for the benefit must, at the time of admission: be under 16 years of age at the start of the school year, be no more than 2 years behind in their schooling, and not be in special education.

Application for school and vocational boarding school benefits

If you wish to apply for admission to a boarding school for your child, you can contact a social worker who will help you put together a file (school social services, local social services in your district, etc.). The social worker will draw up an assessment of your child's situation, together with an administrative file. All documents should be sent to the following address:

Direction des Solidarités
Sous-direction de la Prévention et de la Protection de l'Enfance
Bureau du Service Social Scolaire
Pôle des Internats Scolaires et Professionnels- B. 134
94/96 quai de la Râpée - 75570 Paris cedex 12 - France

Applications for admission to the service are examined by professionals from the School and Professional Boarding School Department. If the decision to admit is not unanimous, the application is studied collectively by the Admissions Committee.

The admissions campaign begins each year in early January, with a view to boarding in September. As boarding places are limited, and in order to ensure that applications are processed as quickly as possible, we recommend that applications be submitted as soon as the campaign begins.

For the start of the school year in September 2023, it is advisable to start preparing your application in January. The deadline for receipt of complete applications is May 6, 2024.

Thomas Mann secondary school

The collège départemental Thomas Mann, located at 91, avenue de France (13th arrondissement), is the first Parisian middle school to house a 48-bed public boarding school.
Boarding students are enrolled from 6e to 3e.
The boarding program is designed for children facing particular or difficult situations that can hinder their progress at school (difficulties with family organization, separation, illness, night work, housing, time management and motivation).
To apply, send a letter to the school principal, stating the reasons for your request and enclosing your first and second term report cards.

The Paris department also offers boarding school and vocational grants to Parisian families temporarily in difficulty, to help children and young people succeed at school and in their careers.

The Paris academy is part of zone C of the school calendar, along with the Créteil, Montpellier, Toulouse and Versailles academies.
