When the weather's cold, what could be better than the warm, reassuring atmosphere of a greenhouse? In Paris, we're in luck: there's a whole string of them! Here are five of them, each with their own personnalities.
Les Serres d'Auteuil
Standing six meters tall and covering 1,368 square meters, the Auteuil greenhouses (16th arrondissement) are home to around 1,000 tropical plants and 500 varieties from across the globe. These greenhouses are remarkable not only for their size but also for their architecture. The greenhouse garden dates back to 1761, commissioned by Louis XVI, a great plant enthusiast. The current large greenhouses were constructed in 2019, featuring galleries that house four biotopes from four continents: South America, Africa, Southeast Asia, and Australia.
Extra info: On April 20 and 21, the gardeners at the Auteuil greenhouses host a weekend of discovery for young and old people alike. The program is right here.
The Great Greenhouses of the Jardin des Plantes
Time for a change of scenery! The Grandes Serres at the Jardin des Plantes (5th arrondissement) include three greenhouses: the Winter Garden, which houses plants from warmer climates; the Square Greenhouse, home to succulent plants; and the Australian Greenhouse, which is unfortunately not open to the public. The latter two are the oldest glass and metal greenhouses in the world.
Extra info: Every Wednesday, children (aged 6 and over) can learn all about the greenhouses alongside it's professional gardeners! Find out more here.

The greenhouse in Square Edouard Vaillant
If you too think that "everything small is cute", then the greenhouse in Square Edouard Vaillant (20th arrondissement) is just the place for you! In this park, in addition to ping-pong tables, a playground and a beautiful stele in memory of deported Jewish children, there's a charming winter garden that hides a greenhouse. This is a miniaturized replica of the large greenhouses fashionable during the Second Empire.
Extra info: Outside the greenhouse, the Square Edouard Vaillant is a green paradise of rare trees. It is home to a Byzantine hazelnut tree that has stood here since 1915, a 27-metre-high Gingko biloba and a Chinese cloudberry.

The Maison du Jardinage's experimental greenhouses
At the Maison du Jardinage (12th arrondissement), plant enthusiasts will find everything they need: an ecological vegetable garden, a room for sharing tips and advice, a specialized library, and of course, a greenhouse. In the greenhouse, it's all about experimentation: mixing, creating, and nurturing existing plants.
Extra info: La Maison du Jardinage offers a myriad of activities to do on your own or with others, all year round. The program is right here.
The tropical greenhouses of the Versailles Arboretum
When the large greenhouses at the Jardin des Plantes weren't big enough, new ones had to be built! And it was in Versailles, in the Chèvreloup arboretum (78), that new greenhouses were built in 1985. Their purpose: to house exotic plants that had no place in the National Museum of Natural History (5th). Among the collected plants, orchids, fuchsias, and pelargoniums are the most prominent.
Extra info: Used by researchers on a daily basis, these greenhouses in Versailles are only open to the public on certain Mondays, for guided tours. Book your tour here !
